Ossiach
Ossiach is a small village on the southern shore of Lake Ossiacher See in Carinthia. It sits surrounded by tall mountains and green woods, with the abbey as its central historic landmark and a clear lake stretching in front.
Ossiach Abbey was founded centuries ago as a Benedictine monastery and served as a major religious center for many years. The site evolved through several building phases, beginning with a Romanesque church around the year 1000 and culminating in the Baroque church that visitors see today, completed in the 1700s.
The name Ossiach comes from the lake that shaped the village. The abbey now serves as a hub for concerts and cultural events, bringing music and art to the community throughout the year.
The village is easy to explore on foot or by bike, with many walking paths and cycling routes in the area. Simple accommodations such as small inns and holiday apartments are available, along with restaurants and cafes where you can rest and eat after outdoor activities.
The village hosts an international craft fair in August where artists sell items made from clay, wood, glass, and natural fibers. This summer event draws many visitors and turns the village into a gathering place for handmade goods and local artistry.
