Ossiach Abbey, Benedictine monastery in Ossiach, Austria.

Ossiach Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Ossiach near Lake Ossiach in Austria. The complex combines Romanesque foundations with Gothic modifications and Baroque decoration throughout its church and surrounding structures.

Founded around 1001, it was the first Benedictine monastery in the Duchy of Carinthia, established by Count Ozi from the Styrian Otakar dynasty. It served as an important monastic center for centuries before later being repurposed for other functions.

The former monastery serves as the main venue for the Carinthian Summer festival since 1974, where classical music concerts and church operas take place in its historic spaces. This musical role shapes the character of the place and brings audiences to experience performances within these centuries-old walls.

The premises are maintained by Carinthia's administration and open to visitors during regular hours. Guided tours through the historic architecture are available, offering insight into the different building styles throughout the complex.

A tomb in the church's northern wall reportedly holds the remains of King Bolesław II of Poland, who lived here as a mute penitent. This connection links the Austrian abbey to Polish royal history through an unusual personal fate.
