Brachina Gorge West Information Bay
Brachina Gorge West Information Bay is an information point in the Flinders Ranges that marks the start of exploration along the gorge. It sits at the junction of Brachina Gorge Road and Blinman Road, with parking and picnic facilities available for visitors.
The gorge contains rocks spanning 800 to 500 million years of Earth's history. A notable marker called the Golden Spike, located near Trezona campground, indicates where the Ediacaran period began, marking the emergence of the first animals.
The information bay serves as a gateway to understanding the natural world, where visitors pause to absorb knowledge about geological formations and local wildlife. People gather here to connect with the landscape's deep history before continuing their exploration of the gorge.
Access is by car, though many roads are unpaved and can be rough after rain, so check conditions beforehand. Booking a campsite in advance is wise, as there are ten campgrounds in the area, with toilets available at most locations.
The Golden Spike is an inconspicuous plaque marking one of Earth's most significant boundaries in geological time. Though just a small marker in the rocks, it represents the moment hundreds of millions of years ago when life on Earth underwent a major transformation.
