Wētā Workshop
Weta Workshop is a production facility in Wellington where artisans handcraft figures, costumes, and props for films. The space combines an active studio with museum displays and a retail shop, allowing visitors to watch craftspeople work and purchase pieces.
The studio started when artists began creating film effects and props for major productions. Over time it gained recognition through work on prominent fantasy films and became an established center for film craft traditions.
The workshop is named after a native New Zealand insect, reflecting local identity through its craft. Visitors watch artists create detailed figures and costumes daily, connecting the region's artistic traditions to global film storytelling.
The location is accessible on foot and welcomes visitors of different ages and abilities, with tours adapted to various needs. Visiting on quieter days helps you see artists at work and get unobstructed views into the studio areas.
The workshop operates in direct partnership with film studios, meaning actual crew members work on current film projects while you visit. This living workspace differs from typical museums by displaying ongoing creativity and unfinished pieces.
