Evans Bay Patent Slip, Maritime heritage site in Wellington City, New Zealand
Evans Bay Patent Slip is a historic shipyard in Wellington with two slipways that extend into the harbor and still show visible steel rails and concrete foundations. The facility was designed so that ships could be lifted and removed from the water.
The facility began operations in 1873 and was New Zealand's first specialized ship maintenance facility for the growing merchant fleet. It served for decades as an important maintenance location for vessels in the region.
The site shows how ships were maintained in New Zealand and reflects the development of harbor work. You can see here how important this facility was for the maritime history of the region.
The site is located right along the water and is easily accessible on foot, with informative panels explaining the old mechanics. The remains are visible from outside and simple to explore without requiring special equipment.
A large gear mechanism is preserved at nearby Cog Park and comes from the original hoisting system. This single component helps visitors understand the power and complexity of the original ship-lifting machinery.
