Gifford Observatory, Astronomical facility in Mount Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand
Gifford Observatory is an astronomical facility on Mount Victoria equipped with a 130 mm Zeiss refracting telescope housed in a dedicated structure for observing the night sky. The telescope allows visitors to view celestial objects under guidance from experienced astronomers during regular public sessions.
Charles Gifford, a science teacher, founded the facility in 1912 and moved it to its current location between two school buildings in 1926. The site was later closed and reopened in 2002 following a major restoration.
The observatory serves as a gathering place for astronomy enthusiasts and students who meet to observe the night sky together. Local schools regularly bring students here to spark interest in the stars and deepen their understanding of space.
Public viewing sessions happen regularly and do not require any special knowledge or equipment. The location on Mount Victoria offers good conditions for sky watching, particularly on clear nights when visibility is at its best.
William Pickering, a former student, played a key role in saving and reopening the facility after decades of closure. His personal connection to the place led to its successful restoration and return to active use.
