St Gerard's Church and Monastery, Gothic religious complex on Mount Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand.
St Gerard's Church and Monastery is a brick and concrete religious complex built in a Gothic style on Mount Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand. It consists of a church building and a three-story monastic residence set on a hillside overlooking the city.
The church opened in 1908 to a design by architect John Sydney Swan, not long after Gerard Majella was officially recognized by the Catholic Church. The monastic building was completed in 1932, designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere, adding a larger residential wing to the site.
The church is named after Gerard Majella, an 18th-century lay brother from Naples known for reported miracles. The altar inside is decorated with religious artwork that reflects the devotion of the Redemptorist order who built and ran the complex.
The complex is within walking distance of central Wellington, though the climb up Mount Victoria involves a noticeable slope. Restoration work is ongoing on the buildings, so it is worth checking in advance which parts of the site can be visited.
This was the first church anywhere in the world to be dedicated to Gerard Majella following his official recognition by the Catholic Church. That origin has drawn pilgrims from other countries to this hillside in Wellington ever since.
