St Gerard's Church and Monastery, Gothic religious complex on Mount Victoria in Wellington, New Zealand.
St Gerard's Church and Monastery is a brick and concrete religious complex with Gothic-style windows spread across multiple structures. The site contains the church building alongside a three-story monastic residence.
The church opened in 1908 under architect John Sydney Swan's design, and the monastic building was completed later in 1932 by Frederick de Jersey Clere. The two structures were built at different times to support religious work.
The complex served the Catholic Church as a mission center that coordinated work across the country. You can still see the altar decorated with fine materials and religious artwork.
The complex sits on Mount Victoria with views toward the city of Wellington. Visitors should know the buildings are currently undergoing restoration work and access may be limited.
This was the first church worldwide dedicated to Saint Gerard Majella after his official recognition by the Catholic Church. That distinction gives the place a unique role in religious history.
