Former Post and Telegraph Building, Art Deco heritage building in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Former Post and Telegraph Building is a six-story Art Deco structure featuring geometric patterns and ornamental details across its concrete and steel facade. Today it houses residential apartments alongside restaurants and retail shops that activate the building throughout the day.
Construction of the building was completed in 1939 under architect Edmund Anscombe's design as a working postal facility for the region. World War II brought modifications that transformed its original function and adapted it for civilian purposes.
The building once served as Wellington's main communication hub, and its bold architectural style continues to define the downtown streetscape as a focal point.
The building sits centrally in the downtown area and is easy to reach on foot, with direct access to shops, restaurants, and public spaces. Visitors can freely explore the ground floor areas and view the architecture from the street.
The roof originally contained two tennis courts, making the workplace appealing for employees working long hours. These facilities proved impractical during wartime and were eventually removed.
