Carter Fountain, Harbor fountain in Oriental Bay, Wellington, New Zealand.
Carter Fountain is a concrete structure located in Oriental Bay, positioned approximately 150 meters from the shoreline. Water jets shoot up to 16 meters high, with side streams creating umbrella-like spray patterns that are visible from much of the bay.
The fountain was funded in 1973 by Hugh Carter, who dedicated it to his parents George and Ella. Carter died unexpectedly in Wellington Harbor shortly after its completion.
The fountain becomes a focal point for public events and celebrations throughout the year, where visitors gather to watch water displays and take photos. Its position in Oriental Bay makes it a natural meeting point for locals enjoying the waterfront.
The fountain operates at set times throughout the day, with sensors automatically stopping water flow during strong northerly winds to protect beachgoers. Access is easy from the Oriental Bay waterfront area, where parking options are available nearby.
Eight LED floodlights illuminate the water display at night with programmable color sequences that change throughout the evening. This modern system replaced the original halogen setup, transforming the fountain into different visual experiences depending on the time.
