Zephyrometer, Kinetic sculpture in Evans Bay, New Zealand
The Zephyrometer consists of a concrete base supporting a 33-meter-tall needle that moves according to the wind conditions in Evans Bay.
In August 2014, a lightning strike damaged the sculpture's needle, leading to a comprehensive restoration process completed in May 2015.
The Zephyrometer belongs to a collection of five major wind sculptures commissioned by the Wellington Sculpture Trust between 2000 and 2010.
The needle's movement serves as a functional wind measurement instrument, indicating both direction and velocity for visitors and residents.
The structure combines engineering precision with artistic design through a carbon fiber and steel needle balanced to respond to environmental forces.
