Newtown Park

Newtown Park is a sports venue with capacity for around 5,000 people located in Newtown, Wellington. The facility includes a running track, football pitch, and training areas spread across expansive grounds near Wellington Zoo.

The grounds were established in 1881 and initially served as housing for New Zealand troops preparing to depart for various international conflicts. Over time it became a permanent sports facility, developing into the modern complex seen today.

The stadium hosts the McEvedy Shield, an annual athletics competition that brings together four Wellington boys schools. Visitors can experience the energy of these established school rivalries during competition season.

Access to the track outside of scheduled training and competition times requires an electronic key fob that can be purchased from Wellington City Council. It is useful to check in advance with event organisers about opening times and any access requirements for your visit.

The facility shifts its use according to the season, with winter months dedicated to football matches while summer periods host track and field competitions. This seasonal division allows different sports to be supported effectively on the same grounds.
