Tapu Te Ranga Marae, Maori cultural center in Island Bay, New Zealand
The architectural structure rises ten stories high into a hillside, constructed from recycled materials including wooden cases and salvaged timber components.
Bruce Stewart founded the marae in 1974 to create a space for Maori community members facing social challenges in Wellington's urban environment.
The marae provided workshops for furniture making and Maori art education, connecting local youth with traditional practices and professional skills.
The building complex encompassed 24 hectares of land, featuring seven distinct segments built into the natural terrain using traditional construction methods.
The structure integrated recycled vehicle shipping crates from Japan, incorporating stained glass installations and architectural elements from various demolished buildings.
