Wellington Zoo, Zoo in Newtown district, Wellington City, New Zealand
Wellington Zoo extends across 13 hectares of green space, housing more than 500 animals from 80 different species within naturalistic enclosures.
The establishment of Wellington Zoo in 1906 began with a lion named King Dick, gifted to Prime Minister Richard Seddon by Bostock and Wombwell's Circus.
Te Kohanga The Nest, the zoo's veterinary facility, has treated over 5000 native animals since 2009, supporting New Zealand's indigenous wildlife population.
The zoo provides daily keeper talks, animal encounters, and guided tours, with facilities including cafes, play areas, and accessible pathways throughout the grounds.
In March 2024, the institution added Te Nukuao Tūroa o Te Whanganui a Tara to its name, incorporating Māori language into its official designation.
