Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham is a temple complex situated at about 1400 meters (4600 feet) in the Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand, set among tall trees and rocky terrain. It contains multiple shrines including a main temple, a Hanuman temple, and a newer Vaishnavi temple, all connected by open courtyards and garden spaces.
This site was founded by the saint Neem Karoli Baba in the 1960s, whom followers revered as an incarnation of Hanuman. Following his death in 1973, his main shrine was consecrated in 1976 and continues to draw devotees honoring his spiritual teachings.
The name Kainchi comes from the shape of the surrounding hills resembling scissors. Devotees gather here daily to pray and meditate, with their presence shaping the rhythm and feeling of worship across the temple grounds.
The site is accessible from June through October when weather conditions are favorable, though it closes during winter months. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear as the terrain includes steep slopes and stairs leading to the upper temples.
The grounds have attracted visits from notable Western figures including Steve Jobs and teacher Ram Dass, who shared experiences of insight and clarity during their time here. These unexpected connections between Eastern spirituality and Western seekers have expanded the site's significance beyond traditional religious boundaries.
