Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo, Nainital

Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo sits in the Kumaon region at 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) elevation across 4.6 hectares of mountain land. The enclosures are designed to mimic natural habitats for Himalayan species against a backdrop of surrounding peaks.

This facility opened its gates in 1995 as Uttarakhand's first zoological park. The establishment marked a significant milestone in wildlife protection efforts across northern India.

The facility carries the name of Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, reflecting the region's commitment to wildlife education and conservation. Visitors experience how mountain communities connect with the animal species that share their homeland.

The zoo is located roughly two kilometers from Tallital Bus Station and operates from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily except Mondays. Wear sturdy shoes since the mountain terrain is steep and the high altitude requires a slower pace.

The facility houses six red pandas and maintains special winter arrangements, including protective curtains for bird enclosures during cold mountain weather. These adjustments show how well the facility adapts to the harsh conditions at this altitude.
