Devasthal Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Nainital district, India
Devasthal Observatory is an astronomical facility in the Nainital district of the Indian Himalayas, equipped with three optical telescopes ranging from 1.3 to 4 meters in diameter, positioned at 2450 meters elevation. These instruments allow researchers to observe distant regions of space and conduct detailed astronomical studies.
The facility opened in 1998 following extensive site surveys conducted between 1995 and 2001 to identify the most favorable location for astronomical work. This preparation phase was crucial in selecting a spot with minimal light pollution and favorable weather patterns.
The facility represents a milestone in Indian astronomy, operating under the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences to advance space research capabilities.
The site sits roughly 9 kilometers from Dhanachuli town and provides overnight accommodation for visiting researchers and guests. Internet access and essential services are available, making extended research stays practical and manageable.
The largest reflecting telescope in Asia was activated here in 2016, equipped with advanced optical systems from Belgium, making it a remarkable instrument for South Asian astronomy. This 3.6-meter scope enables observations that would not be possible elsewhere in the region.
