Baleshwar Temple, Hindu temple complex in Champawat, India
Baleshwar Temple is a complex with three separate shrines honoring Shiva in different forms: Baleshwar, Ratneshwar, and Champawati Durga. Each shrine displays carved stone decorations on its outer walls showing skilled craftsmanship.
The temple was founded in 1390 by Garud Gyan Chand of the Chand dynasty as a major religious center. Subsequent rulers Uday Chand and Hari Chand made significant additions and repairs to the structure.
The temple draws crowds during Mahashivratri when worshippers from surrounding areas gather to pray together and observe regional customs. The compound comes alive with community participation during these celebrations.
The temple is located near the district hospital along the main highway and is accessible during set hours. Photography is not allowed inside the shrine areas, and visitors should wear appropriate modest clothing.
Next to the temple stands a traditional freshwater reservoir called Naula, showing how people historically stored and managed water in this region. This structure is a rare example of ancient water management that survives today.
