Patal Bhuvaneshwar, Hindu cave temple in Pithoragarh district, India.
Patal Bhuvaneshwar is a limestone cave temple that extends 160 meters underground and descends roughly 90 feet below the surface. The cavern contains multiple chambers filled with natural rock formations and adorned with statues and religious symbols.
The site was discovered in the 12th century by philosopher Adi Shankaracharya and established as a major pilgrimage destination in northern India. Since then, it has remained an important center for spiritual visits in the region.
The temple features four separate entrances, each representing different spiritual paths in Hindu belief. Visitors experience these concepts directly as they move through the various passages.
Exploration happens in guided groups since the cave is dark and complex, and most visitors need help navigating the passages. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a jacket, as the floor is uneven and the underground temperature stays consistently cool.
A natural stone formation inside grows slowly and is revered by believers as a sacred sign that might indicate cosmic changes. This living formation is a rare feature that sets the place apart from other religious caves.
