Nanda Devi, Mountain summit in Chamoli district, India
Nanda Devi rises to 7,816 meters in elevation, making it the second-highest mountain in India and the highest located entirely within Indian territory.
The first successful climb to the summit occurred on August 29, 1936, when British mountaineers Noel Odell and Bill Tilman reached the western peak.
The mountain holds deep religious significance in Hinduism as it represents the patron goddess of the Uttarakhand Himalayas and Garhwal-Kumaon regions.
Since 1983, the mountain remains closed to climbers due to environmental preservation measures, with access restricted through the Nanda Devi National Park.
The Central Intelligence Agency attempted to place a nuclear-powered monitoring device on the summit between 1965 and 1968 to track Chinese missile tests.
