Harike Bird sanctuary
Harike Bird Sanctuary is a large wetland area in Punjab featuring expansive water bodies and stretches of land. The landscape contains open water surfaces, small islands, and shoreline areas with grass and trees that provide space for herons, ducks, geese, swans, and other bird species.
The sanctuary was created many years ago through a dam construction project designed to control floods and manage water in the region. Over time, this practical project gradually transformed into a natural habitat that attracts and supports many animal and plant species.
The sanctuary's name refers to the region where it stands. Visitors can observe how the wetland connects to local life, as nearby residents continue fishing and farming activities that keep the area engaged with its natural surroundings.
The best time to visit is from November to February when weather is cooler and more birds are present. Bring binoculars and comfortable walking shoes for the paths, and stay on marked routes to protect the habitat from disturbance.
The area serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds that arrive each year during cooler months from distant parts of Asia to find food and shelter. Watching large flocks arriving and resting on the water is a memorable experience for visitors.
