Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway, State park and nature reserve in Briscoe County, Texas, United States

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is a large protected nature area covering more than 15,000 acres in the Texas Panhandle. The park features an extensive trail system exceeding 60 miles that follows a former railroad route through three counties, passing key locations such as Clarity Tunnel, Lake Theo, and several canyons carved into the Caprock landscape.

A railroad line was built through the area in the 1920s to transport freight and passengers between towns and operated until the late 1980s. The abandoned rail corridor was subsequently converted into a public trailway to provide access for walkers, cyclists, and riders while preserving the region's railroad legacy.

The park sits at the edge of the Llano Estacado plateau, with its name reflecting the canyon-cut landscape that defines the region. Visitors experience how this land once served as a passage for settlers and railroad travelers, while today the old routes have become paths for outdoor exploration and connection to the area's frontier heritage.

Visitors should bring sufficient water and supplies as nothing is sold along the trailway, and cell service can be limited in remote areas. The trail is divided into sections ranging from about 5 to 12 miles, and it is recommended not to hike alone while watching for loose rocks and rattlesnakes along the way.

Clarity Tunnel hosts hundreds of thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats from April through October, which emerge in large numbers at sunset. This natural spectacle regularly draws visitors seeking to witness this remarkable display of wildlife behavior.
