Via Ferrata of Saint Paul de Fenouillet, via ferrata in the Fenouillèdes region, Occitania, France
The Via Ferrata of Saint Paul de Fenouillet is a climbing route that winds through rock faces in the Fenouillèdes region, connected by fixed cables, metal ladders, and suspended footbridges. The main course stretches 900 meters (2,950 feet) and reaches an elevation of 600 meters (1,970 feet), while an easier variant called La Pichona caters to those new to the activity.
The route was developed to boost local tourism and make the Fenouillèdes landscape accessible through outdoor recreation. It was built with safety infrastructure including fixed cables and ladders, and remains one of the few free via ferratas in its department.
The route takes its name from the village of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet nestled in the valley below, a place long connected to mountain pursuits. Today it serves as a gathering spot where visitors can experience the thrill of being suspended above the landscape and testing their courage.
The complete experience takes about 3 to 4 hours including a 10-minute walk to the starting point at La Clue de la Fou, roughly 1 kilometer south of the village. A parking area nearby provides easy access, and it is best to visit on clear days while avoiding strong winds, which can create unsafe conditions.
This is one of the rare free via ferratas in its department, making the activity accessible to everyone regardless of budget. Being open year-round and rising directly above the village gives visitors a rare chance to experience the local geology and landscape in an immediate and physical way.
