Menton Town Hall, Town hall in Menton, France
The Hôtel de Ville Menton is the town hall of Menton on the French Riviera, designed by local architect Victor Sabatier in a neoclassical style. It sits on Rue de la République facing an open square lined with trees.
The building was constructed in 1861 and originally served as a social club for wealthy foreign visitors known as the Cercle des Étrangers. After periods as a theater and a casino, the city of Menton bought it in 1898 and opened it as the town hall in 1901.
The wedding hall inside the town hall was designed in 1957 by Jean Cocteau, the French artist and writer who had a close bond with Menton. Many couples still choose to marry here specifically because of this room.
The town hall is in the center of Menton and easy to reach on foot. The offices are generally open in the morning and early afternoon, and the wedding hall can be visited at certain times.
The building was originally funded by Baron Honoré Ardoïno, who also commissioned the square in front and the surrounding buildings, creating a planned urban ensemble. After his death in 1874, the building changed roles several times before becoming a town hall.
