Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic church in Skopje, North Macedonia
The Église catholique du Sacré-Cœur is a Roman Catholic church in central Skopje, North Macedonia, built to replace the old cathedral that was destroyed in the 1963 earthquake. The building was completed in 1977 and designed by local architect Blagoja Mickovski-Bajo.
The church was born out of the 1963 earthquake that destroyed the old Catholic cathedral and left much of Skopje in ruins. Planning for a new building took years, and the church opened in 1977 to serve the local Catholic community once again.
Next to the church stands a small museum dedicated to Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje, making this corner of the city a gathering point for visitors from many countries. The two sites sit side by side and are often visited together.
The church sits in central Skopje and is easy to reach on foot from nearby streets and public transport stops. The area around it has a few benches and trees, which makes it a good spot to pause before or after a visit.
Pope Francis visited the church and the adjacent Mother Teresa Memorial House in 2019, drawing attention from people across Europe to this corner of Skopje. The memorial itself was built on the exact plot where the destroyed cathedral once stood.
