Church of St. Clement of Ohrid, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in central Skopje, North Macedonia
The Church of St. Clement of Ohrid is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in central Skopje, built in a modern architectural style. The building follows a rotunda layout and contains several chapels along with religious artwork covering much of the interior.
Construction began in 1972, designed by architect Slavko Brezoski, and the cathedral was consecrated in 1990. The project was undertaken to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in this part of Europe.
The cathedral is named after Saint Clement, a 9th-century disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius who taught and worked in Ohrid. His name carries deep meaning in North Macedonia, and worshippers gather here for services following the Orthodox rite.
The cathedral sits in central Skopje and is easy to reach on foot from most parts of the city center. Visitors should cover their shoulders and knees, as the building is used for active worship throughout the week.
The dome of the cathedral is covered with a large-scale modern fresco that mixes Orthodox imagery with a style closer to 20th-century art than to the medieval Byzantine tradition. This detail often surprises visitors who expect a more classical iconography.
