The Stone Bridge is an arch bridge with 13 pillars spanning the Vardar River. It connects Macedonia Square on one side to the Old Bazaar on the other, forming an important pedestrian link through the city.
The bridge was built between 1451 and 1469 under Sultan Mehmed II and served as a crucial junction between Eastern and Western trade routes across the Balkans. It was constructed during a period when the region was under Ottoman control.
The Stone Bridge appears in gold on Skopje's coat of arms and flag, symbolizing the capital's architectural identity. It links two neighborhoods where people move daily between modern life and historical sites.
The bridge is easily accessible for pedestrians with wide, level walkways to cross. Numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops on both sides of the river make it a natural stopping point for visitors.
The central pillars contain hidden chambers that originally served as guard posts. These hollow spaces also had the practical purpose of reducing the overall weight of the structure.
