Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia, Holocaust memorial and museum in Skopje, North Macedonia.
The Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia is a museum and memorial in central Skopje, dedicated to the history of the Jewish community in Macedonia during World War II. It holds permanent exhibition rooms, an archive of documents and photographs, and spaces used for educational programs.
The center opened in 2011 on a site connected to the 1943 deportations, when thousands of Macedonian Jews were gathered and sent to extermination camps. Those events wiped out almost the entire Jewish community of the country.
Inside the center, visitors can see personal belongings, family photographs, and handwritten documents left by Jewish families from across Macedonia. These objects give a direct sense of ordinary lives that existed in the region for centuries before the war.
The center is in central Skopje, close to the Vardar River, and easy to reach on foot from the main square. A visit can take a few hours, so it is worth setting aside enough time.
Three urns holding ashes from Treblinka extermination camp are on display inside the center, brought directly from the site. Next to them stands a real freight wagon that was used during the 1943 deportations.
