Macedonian National Theater, National performing arts center in central Skopje, North Macedonia
The Macedonian National Theater is a theater in central Skopje, North Macedonia, with two halls used for drama, opera, and ballet. The main hall seats around 700 people, while the smaller hall is used for chamber productions.
The theater was founded in 1945 and first operated from a different location in the city, before an earthquake in the early 1960s destroyed the original building. A new building was then constructed, and the theater moved into it in 1983.
The theater presents opera, ballet, and drama on its two stages, making it the main venue for performing arts in the city. During performances, the hall fills with a mix of locals and visitors, giving evenings here a strong sense of occasion.
The theater sits on Iljo Vojvoda street in the city center and is easy to reach on foot from most central points. It is worth checking the program ahead of your visit, as productions rotate throughout the season.
The stage is fitted with movable platforms and modular performance areas, which allow the space to be reconfigured for different productions. This makes it possible to stage works that would be hard to mount in a more conventional theater.
