Lake Braies, Mountain lake in the Dolomites, South Tyrol, Italy

Lake Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee, is a natural mountain lake in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy, set in a rocky valley with steep walls. The water has a greenish color and mirrors the surrounding cliffs and sky, while the Seekofel peak rises sharply above the scene.

The lake sits within the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, which has been a protected area for decades, preserving the wildlife and landscape of the surrounding valleys. In recent years, a sharp rise in visitors prompted local authorities to introduce access rules during the busiest months.

Lake Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee, became widely recognized after an Italian TV series used it as a backdrop, drawing visitors from around the world. Today, wooden rowboats for rent sit along the shore, offering a different view of the water and the surrounding rock faces.

From roughly July to mid-September, car access is restricted, so arriving early or taking the shuttle bus from nearby towns is the practical choice. The path around the lake is manageable for most visitors and requires no special gear.

Even though the water looks inviting, swimming is not allowed because the shores are not suited for it. Visitors who want to get closer to the water can instead rent one of the wooden rowboats available right at the bank.
