Entoto Observatory and Research Center, Astronomical observatory in Sululta, Ethiopia
The Entoto Observatory and Research Center is an astronomical observatory in Sululta, Ethiopia, set on Entoto Mountain at roughly 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) above sea level. It houses telescopes, viewing platforms, and research facilities that are open to both scientists and visiting members of the public.
The site on Entoto Mountain was chosen for its high elevation and good conditions for watching the sky. The Ethiopian Space Science Society, founded in 2004 by a small group of young astronomers, pushed for the observatory to be built, with support from the government and private donors.
Entoto Mountain has held spiritual meaning for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church for centuries, and that presence is still visible around the site today. Visitors who walk the grounds may notice signs of this older tradition alongside the telescopes and research buildings.
The elevation means it can be noticeably cooler here than in Addis Ababa, so bringing a warm layer and drinking enough water during the visit is a good idea. The mountain is easy to reach by taxi or ride-sharing from the city, and comfortable shoes are a good choice for walking the hilly grounds.
The society that built the observatory started in 2004 with just three members and has since grown to around 10,000. It also runs more than 60 astronomy clubs across Ethiopia to bring space science to young people around the country.
