El Nido Bay, Bay and tourist attraction in Palawan, Philippines
El Nido Bay is a bay on the northwestern coast of Palawan, in the Philippines, enclosed by tall limestone cliffs that rise straight out of the sea. The water is shallow enough near the shore to see fish and coral from the surface, and several small islands are scattered just offshore.
El Nido Bay was once a small fishing settlement where local families depended on the sea for their daily lives, a tradition that continued for generations. Over time, word of the bay's natural setting spread, and the area gradually drew travelers looking to reach Palawan's coastline.
The dry season, roughly from December to May, brings calmer seas and better conditions for boat trips around the bay and nearby islands. Setting out early in the morning is a good idea, as the water tends to be smoother and boats are less crowded at that time.
Some of the limestone cliffs surrounding the bay are over 250 million years old, making them among the oldest visible rock formations in the region. They formed on the ocean floor long before the islands themselves existed.
