Temporary garden, Seasonal garden in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France
The Jardin éphémère is a seasonal garden set up each year in front of the town hall on the Place Godefroy de Bouillon in Boulogne-sur-Mer. It occupies the square for the summer months, replacing the usual open space with planted beds, walkways, and decorative elements.
The Jardin éphémère was first created in 2007 and has since grown into a regular summer event in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Each year, the city works with landscape designers and artists to develop a new concept around a chosen theme.
Every summer, the Jardin éphémère turns the Place Godefroy de Bouillon into an open-air display of plants, statues, and objects tied to a new theme each year. Past themes have ranged from ancient Egypt to fables and cinema, giving the garden a fresh look every season.
The garden is open during the summer months and easy to visit even on a short stop in the city center. A small information sign at the entrance explains the year's theme and the plants on display.
In 2010, the theme was the Garden of Gulliver, with giant vegetables and flowers that made visitors feel small by comparison. Once summer ends, the square returns to its ordinary appearance, leaving no permanent trace of the installation.
