Remparts de Boulogne sur Mer

The stone walls of Boulogne-sur-Mer extend for 1.5 kilometers around the upper town, featuring nine towers and four gates that mark the ancient entrances.

Built between 1227 and 1231 by Count Philippe Hurepel on Roman foundations, these fortifications served as a crucial defense system against invasions from the English Channel.

The walls contain architectural elements from different periods, including Roman, Medieval, and 17th-century military engineering, representing the evolution of defensive structures.

Visitors can access the ramparts daily from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM through four preserved gates, with the Castle-Museum serving as the starting point for exploration.

The Porte des Degrés, named after its stone staircase, remains the only gate that maintained its original medieval pedestrian-only access through steps.
