Remparts de Boulogne sur Mer

The Remparts of Boulogne-sur-Mer are stone walls that surround the upper town and feature towers and several gates that once served as entry points to the core. The fortification follows the terrain and creates a distinctive outline above the harbor and old town.

The fortification arose in the 1200s on earlier foundations and was later reinforced to provide the town with protection. Over the decades, its structure was reworked to defend against new forms of attack.

Visitors can explore the walls on foot, with the nearby Castle-Museum serving as a natural starting point. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes since the path is uneven and stairs are present along the route.

One gate, the Porte des Degrés, kept its name from a stone staircase that guided pedestrians through. This gate stands apart because it was designed for people on foot alone, making it distinct from the wider passages elsewhere.
