Mahamandir Temple, Temple in Jodhpur, India

Mahamandir Temple is a Hindu temple built from red sandstone in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is built around an open courtyard, with a large hall supported by 84 carved pillars and a number of smaller shrines to other deities arranged around the complex.

The temple was commissioned in 1812 by Maharaja Shiv Singh and took roughly ten years to complete. It has been restored several times since then, though the original appearance of the complex has been maintained throughout.

The temple comes alive during Maha Shivratri, when the whole complex is decorated with flowers and lights and devotees gather from across the region. Visitors who come on that day can watch the rituals up close and get a direct sense of how the space is used for active worship.

The temple sits on Mandore Road and is easy to reach from central Jodhpur by taxi or rickshaw. It opens twice a day, in the morning and again in the late afternoon, and a morning visit tends to be quieter and more comfortable for walking around.

Each of the 84 pillars is carved with different motifs, including gods, animals, and detailed yoga poses in stone. The presence of yoga postures carved into a temple from the early 19th century shows how deeply rooted that practice already was in the spiritual life of the region.
