Les Arches St Léonard, Tourist attraction in Honfleur, France
Les Arches St Léonard refers to the church of Saint-Léonard, also known as Saint-Léonard des Champs, a religious building at the entrance to the old town of Honfleur. The structure features an octagonal bell tower from the 17th century and a richly carved Gothic portal.
The church was built at the end of the 15th century, replacing an earlier building that had been destroyed during the Hundred Years' War. During the French Revolution, it was briefly turned into a Temple of Reason before returning to religious use.
The church is known for its richly decorated portal, which dates from the late 15th or early 16th century and features carved foliage and pointed arches. Anyone who looks closely will notice a sundial built into the facade just above the entrance.
The church sits right at the entrance to the old town, making it easy to reach on foot from most other points of interest in Honfleur. Access has been adapted for visitors with limited mobility, so everyone can enter and look around.
The octagonal bell tower was never built with a spire, which is unusual for a church of this type. Instead, it ends with a stone cap topped by a small pyramid, giving it a shape quite different from most Norman church towers.
