Rue commerçante de Hongdae, also known as Hongdae Shopping Street, is a commercial street in the Seogyo-dong neighborhood of Seoul, close to Hongik University. The street is lined with fashion shops, accessory stores, shoe boutiques, and themed cafes, with many storefronts featuring colorful and eye-catching designs.
The area around the street began to take shape as a youth hub in the 1990s, driven by the presence of Hongik University, which was founded in 1946 and gradually expanded its art and design programs. What started as a student-oriented cluster of small bars and galleries slowly grew into one of Seoul's most-visited commercial and entertainment zones.
The street has long been a meeting point for students, artists, and young locals who come here to shop, listen to music, or simply spend time together. On weekends, street performers gather at the nearby Hongdae Playground, giving the area a creative energy that sets it apart from other shopping streets in Seoul.
The street is easy to reach on foot from exit 9 of Hongik University Station on the subway. Shops are open during the day, and the area stays active into the evening, so a visit at different times of day gives a very different experience.
On weekends, the Hongdae Free Market brings together local artists who sell handmade clothes, jewelry, and art directly on the street. It is one of the few markets in Seoul run entirely by independent creators, making each visit different from the last.
