Compianto sul Cristo morto by Niccolò dell'Arca, terracotta sculpture group in Bologna, Italy
The "compianto sul Cristo morto" by niccolò dell'arc is a group of seven life-size terracotta figures housed in the church of Santa Maria della vita in Bologna. The figures surround the body of Christ, who lies on a low rectangular base, with each mourner positioned at a different angle around him.
niccolò dell'arc created the group for the confraternity of the white penitents, who ran a hospital in Bologna, sometime in the second half of the 15th century. After spending many decades in the national gallery, the sculpture was returned to its original setting inside the church during the 1990s.
The name "dell'Arc" was not the artist's family name but a nickname he likely acquired during time spent in southern France, possibly referring to a type of arch. The seven life-size terracotta figures are arranged so that a visitor standing in front of the group feels drawn into the scene rather than simply looking at it from a distance.
The sculpture is housed in a small chapel to the right of the main altar inside the church of Santa Maria della vita, making it easy to find once you enter. A morning visit tends to offer calmer conditions, which allows a closer look at the faces and the textures of the terracotta.
the poet gabriele d'annunzio once called this work the "stone scream", a phrase that has stayed with the sculpture ever since and is often repeated by those who write about it. the terracotta was originally painted in bright colors, so the appearance visitors see today is quite different from what the group looked like when it was first made.
