Morlaix Arts tour, Tourist attraction in Morlaix, France
Morlaix Arts Tour is a street art festival in the town of Morlaix, in Brittany, France, featuring murals and sculptures displayed both outdoors across the city and inside an underground tunnel near the train station. The tunnel runs beneath what was intended to be a funicular railway and now houses large works by local and international artists such as Guy Denning and Ezra.
The Morlaix Arts Tour began in 2019, started by artist Zag and the collective Takad Grafañ with the aim of turning the city walls into open-air exhibition spaces. In 2021 and 2022, the festival received Golden Street Art awards, which helped build its reputation across France.
The Morlaix Arts Tour was founded by a local artist named Zag and a group called Takad Grafañ, which means 'Zone to graffiti' in Breton. The mural called 'La Morlaisienne', visible inside a former tobacco factory building, is one of the most recognized works of the tour and was painted by Zag using anamorphosis, a technique that plays with perspective to create optical illusions.
The tunnel near the train station requires advance booking and groups are kept small, so it is worth reserving early. The BavAR[t] app can be downloaded before your visit and lets you find artworks in the streets of Morlaix through a treasure hunt format, which works for all ages.
The tunnel beneath the train station was built in 1906 to house a funicular that would connect the lower town to the station, but the project was never finished. It sat empty for over a century before being opened to the public for the first time to display artworks.
