War Memorial, War memorial obelisk in Rochefort, France
The War Memorial is a stone obelisk in the center of Rochefort, France, dedicated to the soldiers from the area who died in war. It bears 808 names engraved in gold on its surface, and stands within a small, tended green space.
The memorial was built in 1925 to honor the men from Rochefort who died in the First World War. Over time, it came to also represent those lost in other conflicts of the 20th century.
On certain days of remembrance, residents of Rochefort gather at the monument to lay flowers and wreaths. Schoolchildren from nearby schools also visit the site, making it a place where local memory is passed from one generation to the next.
The memorial is easy to reach on foot from Rochefort town center and is visible from the street. A visit around November 11 is a good time to see local remembrance ceremonies in person.
The deadliest day for Rochefort was September 25, 1915, when 33 men from the town fell on a single day. One family living on Rue Guépin lost three sons in the same war.
