Christinias Skating Rink / Peace Square, Tourist attraction in Christiania, Copenhagen, Denmark
Christinias Skøjtebane, also known as Fredsplads, is an outdoor winter skating rink in the alternative neighborhood of Christiania in Copenhagen. The rink features an open square and a longer track, both lit up with strings of Christmas lights during the season.
The rink was created as a new winter tradition after Pusher Street was dug up and transformed as part of efforts to end the open drug trade there. What had been a well-known open market became a gathering place for the colder months.
The rink sits on Pusher Street, once known for its open cannabis trade. That part of Christiania has changed over the years, and today people gather here in winter to skate and browse a small Christmas market nearby.
The rink is open from late November through the winter and is located near Tinghuset inside Christiania, which is easy to reach on foot. Visitors without skates can rent a pair on site, and support frames shaped like animals are also available for those who need help staying steady.
Visitors who struggle on the ice can rent a support animal here, a playful take on the usual skating aid found at rinks for children. This small detail gives the place a relaxed and welcoming feel that sets it apart from other outdoor rinks in the city.
