Place of s'Explanada, Square in the center of Maó, Menorca, Spain
Plaça de s'Explanada is an open paved square in the center of Maó, on the island of Menorca. At its center sits a small park with a fenced playground, and below the square there is an underground car park.
The square has been part of Maó for a long time and has changed its appearance several times over the years. Nearby, an old guardhouse from the 1700s and the town hall are reminders of the town's past.
Every Tuesday, the square turns into a market where artisans sell clothes and accessories. The cafes and terraces around it are good spots to sit with a drink and watch the activity.
The square sits right in the town center and is easy to reach on foot from most areas of Maó. An underground car park below makes it convenient for those arriving by car, and on hot summer days it is better to visit in the morning or late afternoon.
The square is decorated with sculptures by artists such as Timoner, Otero, and Lucarini, which many visitors walk past without noticing. These works are placed naturally within the space and reward a closer look.
