Palacio de Peredo, Historic palace in Santillana del Mar, Spain
The Palacio de Peredo, also known as the Palacio de los Benemejís, is a historic palace on Calle Santo Domingo in Santillana del Mar, Spain. The building has an almost square floor plan, two stories, a hipped roof, and small pinnacles at the corners.
The palace was built in 1694 by Don Francisco Miguel de Peredo, a knight of the Order of Calatrava, replacing an older Gothic tower that had belonged to the Barreda family. In the 19th century it passed to Don Blas María de Barreda and later to the Marquesa de Benamejí.
The Peredo family coat of arms decorates the main facade, while a second coat of arms belonging to the Barreda Ceballos family can be seen inside the portal. These two heraldic symbols reflect how different noble families shaped the building over time.
The palace sits at the entrance to the old town of Santillana del Mar and is easy to reach on foot. It currently hosts exhibitions, so it is worth checking in advance whether an event is taking place during your visit.
Francisco Miguel de Peredo traveled to the Americas and returned with new ideas and resources that shaped the construction of the palace. Next to the building, an older two-story house with Gothic doors and windows still stands, and it also belonged to the Peredo family.
