Torre de Don Borja

The Torre de Don Borja is a three-story tower with a square base and pyramid-shaped roof set in the heart of the historic district. Gothic architectural details define its medieval stone walls and overall structure.

Built in the 15th century as a defensive structure for the Barreda family, this tower was part of Santillana's protective architecture during medieval times. Ownership later passed to Princess Maria de la Paz de Borbon, changing its role and importance.

The Barreda family marked the tower with two Gothic shields on its facade, which remain visible today. These symbols show the building's connection to a powerful local family from centuries past.

The tower sits in the village center and is easy to reach on foot, with the surrounding area typically paved and accessible to walkers. Visitors can explore the interior or participate in exhibitions and guided tours offered regularly.

Following a comprehensive renovation in 2019, the tower blends medieval substance with modern purpose, now serving as a space for contemporary art. This transformation shows how historic structures in Santillana can take on new roles in today's world.
