Librairie La Bicyclette Bleue, Bookshop in the 20th arrondissement, Paris, France
Librairie La Bicyclette Bleue is an independent bookshop in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, located at 45 Rue Pelleport. It carries around 7,000 books across a wide range of genres, including fiction, comics, manga, art books, and a section for children.
The bookshop opened in September 2021, founded by Camille and Simon, descendants of the writer Régine Deforges. Before opening, the space on Rue Pelleport was renovated, with walls removed to let in more light and create a more open layout.
The name of the shop comes from a novel series written by Régine Deforges, a well-known French author. The founders, her daughter and grandson, chose this name as a tribute to her work and to the love of books she passed on to them.
The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from early morning until the evening, and is closed on Mondays. The entrance is flat and open, making it easy to visit for people with reduced mobility.
The founders partly financed the opening through a crowdfunding campaign on the platform Ulule, inviting the local community to take part in the project from the start. The custom furniture was made by a local carpenter, giving the shop a handcrafted feel that sets it apart from larger stores.
