Place Henri Malberg, Square and pedestrian zone in the 20th arrondissement, Paris
Place Henri Malberg is a small square and pedestrian zone in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, near the Belleville neighborhood. It is lined with benches and trees, surrounded by residential buildings with a few small shops at street level.
The square was formerly called Place des Grandes-Rigoles, a name that recalls a medieval water reservoir once used to supply the city. It was officially renamed Place Henri Malberg on March 23, 2018, honoring a local politician who served the 20th arrondissement.
The Jourdain metro station on line 11 is close by, making the square easy to reach on foot from there. As a pedestrian zone, the area is open to everyone and works well as a starting point for exploring the surrounding streets.
The former name, Grandes-Rigoles, points to a medieval water network that once ran through this part of the city, leaving no visible trace today. Most people walking through have no idea the ground beneath them was once part of Paris's water supply system.
