Gold Helmet Garden in the Hedges, Garden in the 20th arrondissement, Paris, France
Jardin Casque d'Or les Haies is a small public garden in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, in the Charonne neighborhood, accessible from Rue Michel-de-Bourges, Rue de la Réunion, and Rue des Haies. It features lawns, trees, flower beds, and simple paths laid out across a compact green space.
The garden was created in 1972 to offer residents of the Charonne neighborhood a green space within the city. It was fully redesigned in 1997, which gave it its current layout.
The garden's name comes from Amélie Élie, a local woman from the Charonne neighborhood who lived in the late 19th century and was nicknamed Casque d'Or for the distinctive headwear she wore. Her story became widely known after a 1950s film starring Simone Signoret brought her name to a broader audience.
The garden is easy to reach on foot or by metro, with line 9 and Buzenval station nearby. It is open during daylight hours, so a visit can fit naturally into any part of the day.
Since June 2007, the garden has included a shared growing area of around 1,400 square meters (about 15,000 square feet) where local residents can tend plants together. This makes it one of the few public green spaces in the neighborhood where residents take an active role in shaping the space.
