Ateliers Berthier, Former warehouse and theater in the 17th arrondissement, Paris
The Ateliers Berthier is a former scenery warehouse turned theater in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, on rue André Suarès near boulevard Berthier. The space features a large central building with wide openings and tall ceilings, reflecting the scale needed to store and build stage sets.
The buildings were designed in 1895 by Charles Garnier, the architect behind the Paris Opera, to serve as a scenery storage facility for the Opera. In 1958 the complex was expanded with concrete additions, and in 2003 the eastern wing was converted into a theater hall, first as a temporary venue for the Odéon Theatre during its renovation.
The Ateliers Berthier are easy to reach by metro from the Porte de Clichy station, and several bus and tram lines also stop nearby. Booking in advance is a good idea since the hall has limited seating.
The same architect who designed the Paris Opera also drew up these workshops, and the spaces were built to accommodate full-scale stage constructions that needed to be moved in and out. The wide doors and ceiling height still reflect that original scale today.
