Old and Used Book Market George Brassens, Covered book market in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, France
The Old and Used Book Market George Brassens is a covered book market located on rue Brancion in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, close to the park of the same name. The hall is lined with tables and shelves stacked with books of all kinds, from old novels and antique volumes to vintage magazines and prints.
The building that houses the market was once part of a municipal slaughterhouse built in the 19th century, which defined the neighborhood for generations. After the slaughterhouse closed, the site was gradually converted, and the covered hall became home to the book market as part of a broader effort to give the area a new life.
Many of the sellers are collectors themselves, happy to talk about a book's past owner or the story behind a particular edition. Some stalls also carry old postcards and vintage prints, giving the market the feel of a small archive rather than a simple shop.
The market opens only on weekends, so arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance to browse before it gets busy. There are no seating areas or restrooms inside, so it is worth stopping at one of the nearby cafes before or after your visit.
The market takes place in what was once the auction hall of the old slaughterhouse, where livestock was sold before being processed. If you look up, you can still see parts of the original 19th-century metal framework of the hall above the book tables.
