Golden Lake is a small mountain lake in Deschutes County, Oregon, located within the Three Sisters Wilderness inside Deschutes National Forest. It sits at around 6,560 feet (2,000 m) elevation, surrounded by conifer trees and rolling terrain.
The Three Sisters Wilderness, where the lake sits, was placed under federal protection during the 20th century to keep the land undeveloped. Before that, native peoples traveled through this highland for generations as part of their seasonal movements.
The name Golden Lake may refer to the warm tones of light that play on the water's surface during morning or evening hours. Hikers passing through often stop here to rest and take in the quiet of the surrounding forest.
The lake can be reached via the Park Meadow Trail, which passes through dense forest and crosses several small streams along the way. Weather at this elevation changes quickly, so bringing extra layers is a good idea even in summer.
Although the lake appears small, it sits at a junction of trails that connect to better-known routes like the Green Lakes Trail, making it a natural stopping point on longer outings. Arriving early in the morning gives the best chance to see the surrounding peaks reflected on the water before any wind picks up.
