Viewpoint of Villefranche sur Mer, Scenic viewpoint in Villefranche-sur-Mer, France
The Belvédère de Villefranche sur Mer is a scenic viewpoint along the Moyenne Corniche, a winding coastal road that runs through the hills above Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera. From there, the view takes in the bay below, the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula stretching into the sea, and the open water beyond.
The Moyenne Corniche, along which the belvedere sits, was built in the early 20th century to link the towns along the coast. The viewpoint itself developed as a natural stopping place on that route, where travelers had long paused to look out over the bay.
The bay of Villefranche is considered one of the deepest natural harbors on the Mediterranean, which gave it a special role for sailors over the centuries. From the belvedere, this shape is still easy to read today, as the water sits like a bowl between the surrounding hills.
The viewpoint is directly accessible from the Moyenne Corniche, and there are a few parking spots nearby, though these fill up fast during the summer months. Arriving early in the morning or in the late afternoon helps to enjoy the view without too many other visitors around.
The bay of Villefranche is deep enough to anchor large warships, and it was used as a NATO fleet anchorage well into the second half of the 20th century. Anyone looking down at the water from the belvedere is therefore gazing over a bay with a very concrete military past.
